Course Overview

This course has been developed by Dr Moya O'Brien, Director of ICEP Europe, with assistance from Dr Sean Carey, Principal Psychologist with St. Michael's House services. Both Dr O'Brien and Dr Carey are experienced Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) practitioners.

Applied Behaviour Analysis is a precise, systematic and measurable method for teaching children with developmental disabilities to learn. It is based on sound behavioural principles and evidence-based research and practice. Essentially an educational method, it has a wide range of applications, particularly within the field of developmental disabilities. These areas include teaching children with developmental disabilities, including autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder, intervention with problem behaviours, and parenting. The course is designed to actively engage students in learning both the analytical skills and the practical techniques of ABA.

CPD Credits for Psychologists

ICEP Europe is delighted to announce the accreditation for CPD purposes by the Psychological Society of Ireland, for its members, of our online course, Applied Behaviour Analysis: Interventions for Developmental Disabilities. The course has been awarded 15 credits for continuing professional development in psychology. ICEPE will continue to work with PSI to build a comprehensive portfolio of accredited courses for psychologists.

Who is this course aimed at?

While this course is primarily designed for teachers and allied professionals, it may also be helpful for parents who want more detailed information about the development and education of children and young people.

Course Content

In this course we cover all the key techniques of the ABA method, which include positive reinforcement, graduated prompting, repetition and teaching tasks in very small (discrete) steps. You will learn to apply ABA procedures in order to increase behaviours, teach behaviours and decrease challenging behaviours. You will gain an understanding of learning theory and the application of learning theory to youngsters with disabilities and you will learn how to motivate children with severe and profound disabilities to learn new skills. Through our interactive discussions we will share experiences and together solve some of the challenges that we meet in working with people with developmental disabilities.

Tuition and Support

• Specialised tutors working in the area of learning disabilities will provide you with individual support and guidance as you complete your studies online
• Technical support is provided by our dedicated team of qualified learning technologists, who can be contacted by telephone or email.

Assessment & Award:

Each student is required to complete the following items

• Interactive Learning Assignment per module
• Reflective Assignment
• Completion of CPD record

On successful completion of the course, students will receive a Certificate of Professional Development. A CPD Record that includes reflective assignments and course work contributions can be printed off for addition to a CPD portfolio.

Subsidised Course Fee: €190

Full Course Fee: €510

Currently employed teachers in the Republic of Ireland are eligible for subsidised fees. Please note that the number of subsidised places is limited and the full fee will apply once these places are filled.
