Using Free and Low Cost Tools in the Classroom

Course Overview

ilg_logoThe following course is offered during the Summer Term only in partnership between ICEP Europe and the Inclusive Learning Group.

The core objective of this course is to provide teachers with a clear overview of educational technology resources which are freely available or can be obtained at a very low cost. The course outlines teaching methods to develop and extend students’ learning in an inclusive environment by using technology. The emphasis will be placed on practicable classroom applications of these resources, supported by reference to the current literature in the educational technology field.

The course will also provide teachers with a clear understanding of the use of emerging Web 2.0 tools including cloud computing, social networking, blogging and podcasting in order to foster creativity, personalised learning and collaboration. A clear pedagogical rationale will be presented for the use of these emerging technologies to promote learning and enable inclusion under the guiding principles of universal design for learning (UDL). Reference will also be made to assistive technology solutions for students with special needs.

It is suitable for teachers at primary and post primary level, and covers:

  • Introduction to Teaching and Learning using Today’s Technologies
  • Web 2.0
  • Cloud Computing
  • Assistive Technology: definitions, devices and best practice
  • The convergence of technologies – implications for teaching and learning

Who is this course aimed at?

This course is suitable for teachers at primary and post primary level and provides an overview of a range of learning theories and thinking techniques.

Key Course Information

  • The course comprises 5 interactive learning modules, each taking approximately four hours online study time to complete, or 20 hours in total
  • Learning is self-paced, allowing you to design your own study schedule around existing commitments, and giving you total freedom and flexibility
  • On completion of the course you will receive a Certificate of Continuing Professional Development and a Learning Log of your course work which can be included in your CPD portfolio
  • This course is pending approval by the Department of Education and Skills. Three EPV days will be allowed for primary school teachers who take the course during the summer term pending approval. Please note this provision applies only to the summer term as per Department guidelines*
  • Completion of a Reflective Assignment gives you the opportunity to analyse the key learning points from the course and how they can be applied in your classroom over the year ahead
  • Participants are encouraged to interact with each other via the online discussion forum, allowing learners to enter active discussions with their colleagues and receive feedback from the expert course tutors.

  • Technical support is provided by our dedicated team of qualified learning technologists, who can be contacted by telephone or email.

Assessment & Award:

Each student is required to complete the following items

  • Completion of CPD record

On successful completion of the course, students will receive a Certificate of Professional Development. A CPD Record that includes reflective assignments and course work contributions can be printed off for addition to a CPD portfolio.
